Maci's Story

October 16, 2012, Trent and I walked into the hospital at 6am with super mixed emotions.  Part of me was super excited to have this over with and hold my little girl but part of me was not ready to share my attention. I felt terrible for leaving Mya and changing her whole world.  At the same time I was so excited to give her a sister.  Well the nurses didn't waste any time getting me ready to go.  I didn't even have time to blink before I had the IV in my arm and the penicillin started.  I tested positive early on in the pregnancy for group b strep so I had to have at least 2 rounds of penicillin before the baby was born.  By 6:45 they had started pitocin and the waiting game began.  I was so nervous about waiting too long I kept telling the nurse to be ready because I was not going to let the pain get too bad.  I started progressing very nicely and quickly and they thought before noon I would have the baby. About 9:30 they broke my water and the nurse decided she better start my bag of fluid so I could get the epidural.  The contractions weren't too bad so I was kind of worried I was getting the epidural too soon.  Oh boy was I wrong!  Not even 5 minutes after they broke my water I was in so much pain I was telling Trent I can't do this and he just came and rubbed my face and held my hand and said it wouldn't be long before the epidural would come.  Thank heavens he was right.  It literally seemed like ten minutes later the anesthesiologist walked in and started getting me all prepped for the good stuff! I love epidurals, they make me so happy:)  Although this time Maci was face up and resting on my tail bone so I still had some back pain.  Every half hour I had to change positions to get her to move.  They knew she moved when the back pain went away.  Every hour they would increase the pitocin and watch the contractions.
I could tell the doctor was a little concerned when she pulled up a chair and sat and watched the monitor for a good half hour and that I was an 8 but the baby hadn't dropped any.  Well it was around 6pm and I still hadn't had her and I was stalled for quit some time at a 9.  In between all the people coming in to check me I had Trent give me a blessing.  I didn't want to admit it but I knew in the early afternoon that I was going to have a c-section.  I do believe Heavenly Father was trying to prepare me for the c-section.  About 6:15 my doctor put her hand on my leg and said Emily, I know you don't want this but there is some reason that baby is not dropping and her heart rate is dropping after the contraction and not during and she needs to come out via c-section.  I just looked at Trent and we both gave each other a look like we knew it would be ok.
It took like point two seconds for them to prep me and wheel me into the OR.  IT WAS FREEZING! I surprisingly kept my emotions in check the entire time but almost lost it when they said ok Trent we'll come get you in about 15 minutes.  What! I needed him, how could they make me go in there alone?  Well I closed my eyes and just thought of Mya playing at home.  I heard the doc say ok someone bring in Trent,  but he never let me know he was there.  I could feel (no pain) them start to cut and in my mind I started freaking out because I didn't know where Trent was.  I opened my eyes and was about to shout, Where is my husband? and I saw him standing there.  He thought I was asleep and didn't want to wake me;)
The next thing we hear is the doctor say "Trent, stand up and look you gotta see this!" the cord was wrapped around my little girls neck TWICE.  I thought there was no way he was going to look.  I mean, seriously, he had his eyes closed the entire time with Mya.  But he did and thought it was pretty cool.  He even snapped a picture.  My poor sweet girl couldn't drop because she was being strangled.  She was born at 6:50pm, weighed 6 lb 13 oz, and 19 1/2 inches long.  She is perfectly healthy and the best baby.  A c-section is the last thing I wanted but it was the only way to get Maci here safely.  I am so grateful for my doctor and for all the people who took care of me, especially Trent.  Welcome to our family Maci Aleen!
